  Active Shooter

US Department of Homeland Security’s recommendation, quickly determine the most reasonable way to protect your own life. Remember that customer, clients, and visitors are likely to follow the lead of the employees and managers during an active shooter situation.

Familiarize yourself with your company’s active shooter/workplace violence plan. Know who your Floor Wardens and other team members are. Evacuate - If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to get out. Be sure to have an escape route and plan in mind ahead of time.

    • Evacuate regardless of whether others follow.
    • Leave your belongings behind, silence your cell phones, help others escape.
    • If possible, prevent individuals from entering an area where an active shooter may be.
    • Do not attempt to move wounded people.
    • Keep your hands visible; follow instructions of any police officers.
    • Call 911 when you are safe.

Hide Out - If evacuation is not possible.

    • Find a hiding place out of active shooter’s view that provides protection if shots are fired (i.e., an office with a lockable door).
    • If it is not possible to lock the door, blockade the door with heavy furniture.
    • Silence your cell phone and turn off any source of noise (i.e., radios, televisions).
    • Remain quiet.

Take Action - As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by:

    • Act aggressively as possible against him/her...yelling.
    • Look for objects that can be used as weapons to throw (phones, staplers, lamps, etc.).
    • Commit to your actions.
    • When police arrive, keep hands visible, avoid sudden movements and follow instructions.
